Monterrey, April 8: Spanish top-seed Garbiñe Muguruza defeated Romania’s A Bogdan 6-0, 7-5 to reach the fil of the Monterrey Open.
Muguruza, using her strong serve, powerful double-handed backhand and superb placement, broke her opponent three times as she won the first set 6-0.
Bogdan made some adjustments at the break and upped her game in the second.
The set was poised evenly at 5-5 when the world number three Muguruza broke the Romanian’s serve and went on to clinch it 7-5.
“In the first set I played very well, I think she made some unforced errors,” Muguruza said later.
“Then the player that I expected showed up, she was very aggressive, she made great shots. In the end, I’m happy I knew how to mage that situation and win in two sets,” she added.
In Sunday’s fil, the Spaniard will be up against Hungarian fourth-seed Timea Babos, who came back from a set down to defeat the American Sachia Vickery 1-6, 6-2, 6-3. IANS
