Bongaigaon, July 22: A mysterious murder has shaken Bongaigaon. The body of a businessman was recovered from the septic tank of Subala Basumatary’s house at Vivekananda Palli in Bongaigaon town on Sunday. Julfikar Ali (55), originally from Bihar, was a resident of Vivekananda Palli and owner of a tyre shop. His son told mediapersons that Julfikar was missing since the evening of July 15. “On that day he went out of the house saying that he was going to Subala Basumatary’s house and since then he never returned home. On July 17, somebody called me and introduced himself as an NDFB cadre. The man said that they had kidnapped my father and demanded Rs 15 lakh for his release. I immediately informed the police and lodged an FIR on July 18. On July 20, the kidnapper again called me and asked me to take the money to Bijni in Chirang. I went there after informing the police but the kidnappers could not be nabbed. Today police recovered my father’s body from the septic tank of Subala Basumatary’s house,” said Julfikar’s son.

Pranjit Saikia, Additional Superintendent of Police of Bongaigaon, said that police started investigation after the FIR was lodged. “We traced the mobile number and by analyzing the caller list, we found connection between the kidnapper and Subala. At first we tried to nab both the kidnapper and the woman at the same time and hence we planned to nab them in Bijni where they wanted the money to be delivered. We arrested the woman from her house but the kidnappers could not be nabbed that day. After interrogation, we got some clues and last night we nabbed two youths - Ajay Daimary (22) and Sukrawng Basumatary (28) - from two different places of Bijni. Sukrawng is a NDFB cadre and was arrested earlier also. On spot interrogation, they confessed that they and Subala had murdered Julfikar on July 15 and hidden the body in the septic tank of Subala’s house. Demanding extortion money was also Subala’s plan they said. We have arrested all of them and have started investigation,” Additional SP said.

An illicit relationship between Subala and Julfikar has been suspected. “The reason behind the murder may be money or something else. We will reach the conclusion very soon,” the Additional SP said. After recovery of the body, the local people of the area staged demonstration on the main road of Bongaigaon demanding compensation for the victim’s family and punishment for the culprits. The mob was controlled by the police after assuring to fulfil their demands.
