Nagaland: TASU Suspended NH 702 Blockade Temporarily

Guwahati: The blocked organised on Nagaland's National Highway 702 (Mon-Namtola road) by the Tizit Area Students’ Union (TASU) has temporarily suspended for a period of two weeks by the organisation.

The decision to lift the ban came following the Nagaland Government Assurance to the Union to look into their demands.

Noteworthy, TASU had imposed the blockade in protest against the government’s failure to address to their demands regarding construction of an Inter-State Connectivity (ISC) road from Tizit town via Yanpan-Sako-Loakkum-Nokzang-Khonsa (Arunachal Pradesh), construction of four RCC T-beam bridges along the National Highway 702 (Mon-Namtola road); and picking up the pace of the road construction works.

Revealing about the Union's decision, T Noklem Konyak, President of TASU said, the blockade had been temporarily suspended at the request of the State government and after having received written assurance from the government with the hope that the inquiry committee constituted by the government and headed by W&H additional secretary would inquire into the matter seriously.

Meanwhile, the contractors also reportedly gave a written assurance to resume and speed up the ongoing works, while also promising to complete them within the stipulated timeframe and as per the specifications mentioned in the work order.

According to reports, Principal Secretary to the Government of Nagaland, Lhoubeilatuo Kire had written a letter to the TASU president on Tuesday last stating that the Nagaland State PWD Minister had convened an emergency meeting to discuss the indefinite road blockade imposed in the Tizit area.

On the otherhand, TASU, KU, and KSU warned of filing a Public Interest Litigation in the event of failure of non-fulfilment of the assurances. TASU also thanked the government for its prompt response, besides the people of Mon district in general and Tizit area in particular for extending support and cooperation during the blockade.

In the letter, the government has reportedly appealed to the TASU to ‘give the department a timeline of one month to complete the whole process’.
