MORIGAON: The Nagaon Paper Mill Protection Manch has decided to hold a 24-hour fast from August 14 to August 15 and a national highway blockade at Jagiroad if the Central Government does not take any step for revival of the mill till August 14. The organization has expressed dissatisfaction at the non-revival of the paper mill even after repeated assurances by the Prime Minister and the Chief Minister. In a press release, Atanu Sarma, the chief convener of Nagaon Paper Mill Protection Manch, said that the paper mill did well from 1996 to 2009. The decline of the paper mill started from the financial year 2009-10 and the mill began to face losses. Later, Nagaon Paper Mill was shut down in the year 2016 and even the Cachar Paper Mill went bankrupt during the fiscal year 2015.

The employees of both the paper mills are facing a dark future as chances of re-opening the paper mills are slim. The employees of the mill are struggling to make both ends meet by working in hotels and restaurants. Sarma urged the Centre to take immediate steps to revive both the paper mills.
