Nagaon Police arrests AAMSU leader on alleged charges of Extortion

Nagaon: After Uriamghat alleged extortion incident in Sarupathar area, the Nagaon police on Thursday have arrested the President of All Assam Minority Students’ Union (AAMSU), Kadir Ali of Golaghat unit on charges of extortion from Golaghat jail.

As per reports, two vehicles under the instructions of Kadir Ali intercepted a fully loaded truck carrying Godzilla coils near the Nagaon bypass coming from Myanmar and allegedly extorted an amount of Rs 20 lakh from the driver on September 28.

Following which, the driver in the truck lodged an FIR at the Golaghat police station on the same day of the incident.

Based on the FIR, lodged by the truck driver AAMSU President, Police started their investigation into the matter and Kadir was arrested by Nagaon police today.

It may be mentioned that Kadir Ali along with Sayadur Rahman, Altaf Hussain, Imran Hussain, Yasin Ali, Ishad Hussain and Mushfiq Ali was earlier arrested by Golaghat police on October 2, 2018.

They were arrested by Sarupathar Police for allegedly extorting money of Rs 50,000 at a stone quarry in Uriamghat of Sarupathar region under Golaghat District.

Speaking to The Sentinel, AAMSU, Advisor, Azizur Rahman said, "We are shocked to hear that the district president has been arrested on extortion charges. We have been investigating the matter from our side as well, however, the members of the Golaghat Unit claimed it to be false allegations. This has been the first time in the history of AAMSU where a president was arrested on extortion charges. We are not sure that whether Kadir was involved in running such extortion racket or not, there is no such evidence available with us so far."
