Nagas Take To Streets In Delhi, Threaten To Boycott Lok Sabha Polls

NEW DELHI: Thousands of people from various Naga communities under the aegis of the Naga Students’ Union, Delhi (NSUD) on Saturday took to the streets in New Delhi demanding an early solution to the ‘Indo-Naga’ imbroglio. The Naga communities have even threatened to boycott the forthcoming general election if their demands are not taken seriously.

“Before the last general elections, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had assured us that his government will resolve their problems if the BJP comes to power…now the next election is knocking the door, what has happened to that promise?” posed Soso, a Naga leader.

In support of their demands, Nagas from across the globe on Saturday gathered in the national capital and organized a massive rally from Mandi House to Jantar Mantar.

Significantly, ‘Indo-Naga’ peace interlocutor RN Ravi is proceeding on a three-day official visit to Nagaland from February 26. According to sources, Ravi would try to convince the Naga leadership about the progress of peace talks.

“We want to ask Ram Madhab and RN Ravi where the solutions are,” another Naga leader present on the occasion said.

Ever since the BJP government came to power, several rounds of talks took place “but nothing evolved from those parleys.”

Union Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju, however, said on several occasions that the peace talks had reached the final stage.

The peace talks between the government and the National Socialist Council of Nagalim-Isaac-Muivah (NSCN-IM) along with the Working Committee (WC) comprising six Naga National Political Groups (NNPGs) have not brought about “much tangible results” except the ‘Indo-Naga’ Framework Agreement signed in 2015, the protestors said.
