National Fire Service Week observed in Nagaland

KOHIMA: In observing the “National Fire Service Week” with the rest of the country, the Department of Fire and Emergency Services, Nagaland, Kohima organised a fire awareness training with the theme ‘Fire prevention and fire awareness’ at Local Ground Kohima.

Highlighting the significance of the ‘Fire Service Week’, SI Chumbemo Patton stated that the ‘Fire Service Day’ is celebrated on every April 14 in commemoration of the 66 gallant officers and firemen of the Bombay Fire Brigade who laid down their lives in fighting the infamous Bombay Dockyard inferno incident. The day is observed as ‘Martyrs’ Day’ to pay homage to those brave firemen and the day is also set aside for mass awareness campaigns on fire hazards and safety measures by conducting public education programmes through various methods such as fire safety and evacuation drills, public lectures, demonstrations, mock drills etc. across the country.

Patton also shared information on safety and compliance when such untoward incidents break out. The information for the general public include: informing the Fire Services; not to misuse Fire Service Telephone numbers since it is a punishable offence; to give the right and precise information; to use appropriate fire extinguishers at the initial stage to contain fire; not to pour water on oil and electrical fire; to inform Power department to cut off power line in the locality to avoid further disasters; to give way to fire tenders to pass unobstructed; not to use fire sirens by any other individuals or organizations; to locate the fire incident spot, guide and show fire personnel the shortest possible route to locate the source of fire and supply water at the vicinity of the fire incident; to install fire extinguishers, fire alarms, smoke detectors, fire hydrants and sprinkler systems at homes; every household to maintain a small water tank to meet any fire hazards before fire personnel arrive; to use certified and standard electrical appliance viz., wires, plugs, fuse, switches, sockets, etc.

During the training, a demonstration on the usage of different types of fire extinguishers was given by ASI Menose Zashümo; first aid and rescue technique by ASI Tejongol Sophie; ropes and lines by ASI Hairam and ladder and live demonstration by SI Sevi Kera.

SI Thepfukranyu in his closing remarks thanked all the participants from various departments for extending their cooperation and making the training a success.

JALUKIE: The Nagaland Fire and Emergency Service, Peren, also conducted a fire awareness training under the theme ‘Fire Prevention is better than Fire Fighting’ at the Traffic point, Jalukie Town.

The Programme was chaired by SL Kezhalelhou Sachu Second OC Fire Station, Peren. In his welcomed address, he appealed to the public to take note of the demonstrations shown to them on the “Do’s and Don’ts” on Fire Safety Measures, Care Maintenance and Safety of LPG, rescue Techniques and bandages, Use and operation of Fire extinguisher, Demonstration on LPG fire.

The training was attended by the personnel of various Government departments and the public in and around Jalukie Town. The vote of thanks was extended by SI Kezhalelhou Sachu.

PHEK: The fire service week was observed at Phek Town Council Hall with the theme “Fire Prevention is better than Fire Fighting”. The function was chaired by EAC Phek Sadar where he called upon the gathering to know how to handle for fire incidents. The welcome address was delivered by Imliakum Sanglir, EAC Phek.

A brief note was given by OC Fire and Emergency Phek, Sheiya Konyak. He cautioned the public to be careful of the electric circuit as most often fire incidents are caused by an electric circuit. He also requested the people to have a portable extinguisher.

Wokha: The Department of Fire and Emergency Services, Wokha, conducted the Fire Service week on the theme ‘Fire Prevention is better than Fire Fighting’ at the public ground, Wokha. Wokha EAC Riku Khutso, while addressing the gathering said, “Looking at the context of our society, fire safety education and awareness is poor” and he urged the department to take this day as an opportunity to take fire service to the people and generate awareness and relationship with the general public.

He also stated that the public must be educated to take precautionary measures to prevent fire accidents and also educate the public on survival skills during fire accidents. He further dwelled on some basic fire safety measures for the public. Lauding the services rendered by the firemen.

Later a demonstration on rescue techniques and use of fire extinguishers was held.
