National Press Day observed in Dibrugarh

Dibrugarh: The Centre for Studies in Journalism and Mass Communication of Dibrugarh University observed the National Press Day on Friday at Sri Sri Aniruddhadeva Bhavan of Dibrugarh University.

Gracing the occasion as a guest speaker, PJ Baruah delivered a speech on ‘Freedom of Press in Present Context’. Dean of School of Humanities, Social Science and Law, Dibrugarh University presided over the function.

In his speech, he spoke on the various challenges in journalism as well the prospects of print media in the face of the emergence of new media. He also underscored the importance of vernacular press in a country like India, where a large section of the population has a strong leaning for vernacular newspapers.

The Dibrugarh Press Club (DPC) also observed the day by visiting the culturally-rich Tai village of Namphake at Naharkatia, Dibrugarh. Organized as part of the club’s annual outreach programme, the members interacted with the villagers in a session moderated by the president of DPC, Prabir Chakraborty. The day was also celebrated by the Greater Dibrugarh Press Club.
