NCHAC elections might be delayed

Haflong, April 4: The election to the 12th NC Hills Autonomous Council is most likely to be delayed as the Dima Hasao Deputy Commissioner in a letter to the Commissioner and Secretary to the Government of Assam, Hills Area Department, Dispur vide letter no NCH/EL/DC-1/2017-18/6437 dated March 31 expressed difficulties in deploying officers and staff for election duty as 80 per cent of the field officers are now engaged in NRC verification works. The terms of 11th NCHAC will expire on June 3, 2018. Accordingly, the election to elect the 12th NCHAC is due in May 2018, but as per the order of Supreme Court of India conveyed vide its order number dated 27.03.18 WP (c) 274/2009, no officer and staff already engaged in NRC updation works, except one Additiol Commissioner would be spared for conduct of panchayat election, informed the Deputy Commissioner.

 Meanwhile, the Dima Hasao District Congress (I) president Nirmal Langthasa, while reacting to probable delay in election, said that they were against the delay in election to the NCHAC and they were holding a series of meetings with legal experts and also their workers so that the government could be pressurized to hold the election to the NCHAC on time. A member of Dima Hasao Asom Ga Parishad (AGP) said they too were against the delay in election to the NCHAC. “We want election to the NCHAC to be held on time otherwise we will be compelled to go for agitation soon,” said the AGP member.
