FROM A CORRESPONDENT

HAFLONG, January 29: Following the resigtion of Subrata Thaosen, Chairman of the N C Hills Autonomous Council, the emergent session of the Council scheduled to be held today to move ‘No Confidence Motion’ against Niranjan Hojai, CEM of NCHAC was called off.

Meanwhile, the 16 MACs met Governor P B Acharya, who was here at Haflong to attend the 55th General Assembly of Hmar Students’ Assembly and submitted a memorandum to him today.

The 16 members, who have signed the memorandum, stated that it was learnt that just on the eve of the emergent session of the Council scheduled to be held on January 29, to move “No Confidence Motion” against Niranjan Hojai, CEM, NCHAC, Subrata Thaosen, Chairman of the Council, resigned from his post yesterday and his resigtion was also accepted.

“The malafide intention of the Chairman was quite clear here, given the timing of the resigtion. It was clearly to derail the democratic process of the emergent session scheduled he held today,” they said.

Under the circumstances, they firmly believe that appointment of Pro tem Chairman of the Council was of utmost importance for smooth conduct of business in the emergent session of the Council.

They also feel that as the very agenda of emergent session of the Council was a serious and urgent one, it cannot be delayed over the issue of the election of the New Chairman.

“Since it was also learnt that the MACs from the ruling party have sought for Pro tem Chairman for the emergent session, there was no objection from any quarter in this regard,” they stated in the memorendum.

They have urged the Governor to take necessary action for appointment of a Pro tem Chairman of the Council for smooth conduct of business in the emergent session immediately.

They also recommended the me of Ngamrothang Hmar, MAC & former Chairman, NCHAC to act as the Pro tem Chairman.

Talking to reporters, Governor Acharaya assured that the recent council’s state of affair would be solved at the earliest. Regarding the grede attack and firing he directed the SP, Dima Hasao to do the needful. When asked about the future of the NCHAC, he said council would be functioning very soon and pending salary of the council employees would also be cleared soon.

Anil Raja, general secretary, APCC while condemning the yesterday’s violent incidents in Dima Hasao where brother of DCC (I) president and other Congress workers were kidpped on the eve of the special session of the NCHAC and it was known to all that the NCHAC was going to be ruled by Congress, the BJP has indulged in mischievous activities to derail the today’s session of the NCHAC.
