SHILLONG, Oct 22: The tiolist Congress Party (NCP) held a convention at the District Auditorium, Tura on Saturday.

According to a statement issued by the party, the convention, which was scheduled to start at 10 am, could not be started on time as NCP tiol general secretary Praful Patel could not take off from Guwahati by helicopter as per schedule in the morning due to inclement weather.

The Lok Sabha MP, along with rendra Verma, in-charge NCP Northeast, filly started from Guwahati at 11.30 am, but their helicopter had to return from midway as the weather played spoilsport. Due to very less visibility, the helicopter could not land at Tura.

In spite of the fact that the convention began late, the NCP claimed that the auditorium was packed to the capacity and that hundreds of people could not be accommodated and they had to return.

The convention started with a welcome speech by NCP Meghalaya unit vice-president Vijay Raj, who asserted that his party would come to power on its own in the 2018 Assembly election. This was followed by presentation of traditiol attire and flower bouquets to the special invitees on the stage. Special Invitees MLA Saleng A Sangma and MLA John Lesley K Sangma spoke on the occasion and stated that the State is still reeling under fincial crises, unemployment and also talked about other problems affecting the people of the State. They claimed that the NCP was the only secular party who could make an impact and bring good governce to the State.

Saleng said that people know what has been done by the Congress in Meghalaya and by the BJP at the Centre and that both have failed to deliver.

Former MLA and NCP Meghalaya unit general secretary Disang M Sangma too gave a speech on the occasion. The vote of thanks was given by NCP’s Garo Hills Autonomous District Council member Rightious N Sangma, the statement added.
