Nearly 800,000 People Commit Suicide Every Year in The World; Why?

Suicide is a rather common word today. Mostly found amongst the youth, this mental disease is slowly poisoning our society right from the roots and this is the high time that we must come out united to free the world from this mental illness. A recent study has shown that nearly 800,000 people commit suicide every year in the world and this is a shocking thing to deal with.

We are living in a world of technological advancements, modern lifestyle, hectic routines whether it is an office routine or a student’s life and several means of entertainment right from the social media to the idiot box and despite living in such a rich and affluent world, why and how can one feel deprived and compelled to finally give up all hopes and pleasures of an earthly existence!

Although several mental stress relief campaigns, workshops, psychological consultations and healing remedies are being introduced and implemented for keeping the suicide thoughts away from people, everything seems to be vain seeing at the WHO report on suicide rates every year.

The World Health Organization (WHO) and the Mental Health Commission of Canada have even introduced a toolkit to help communities prevent suicide. As people aged 15-29 are seen mostly falling prey to this sickness, people of this age group are particularly being targeted through the toolkit.

Suicide is not a particular class based disease and can take anyone irrespective of caste, creed, colour and social status under its grip. But a study of the suicide trends has indicated one thing that it mostly occurs in low and middle-income countries. A document on the suicide states, “Suicides take a high toll. Over 800,000 people die by suicide every year and it is the second leading cause of death in 15-29-year-olds.”

Suicide leaves a dark and deeply negative impact on the family members of the victim as they are the ones who are not only mentally and emotionally in a loss but are also made responsible for the suicide. Many fingers are pointed towards them making them responsible for their family member’s decision to commit suicide.

The document further stated, “The impact on families, friends and communities is devastating and far-reaching, even long after persons dear to them have taken their own lives.”

Apart from the family stress, relationship failure, financial breakdown and unsuccessful life, there are other reasons too that back one to commit suicide. One commonly seen factor in the high-income countries is that mental health issues such as depression and alcohol use disorders compel one to take the ultimate decision of life.

As remedial measures to prevent and control and issue of suicide cases, one must ensure limited use of alcohol and drug abuse, effective mental health care, and ensuring follow-up care for the ones who have attempted suicide earlier. Other sectors of the society that too needs to be taken into consideration for ensuring a decrease in the suicide trend are labour, agriculture, education and media.

Efforts have been made to heal the mental stress and traumas of people so that one is not forced to take this lethal decision in life. Right from information spread through print, electronic and social media; movies, telefilms and soaps are also being made to discourage people from committing suicide by making them aware of the after effects of it.
