NEC member calls for innovative R&D solutions

SHILLONG, Aug 4: The North Eastern Council recently reviewed the science and technology sector of the region in a regiol review meeting held at the NEC Secretariat in Shillong. The meeting was chaired by the Member, NEC, CK Das, stated a press release on Tuesday.

The release stated that the meeting was attended by the concerned senior officials of NEC along with the officials of the planning departments and line departments of the Northeastern States as well as NESAC, NEIST and NERIST etc.

The meeting deliberated on Science & Technology related issues such as R&D, Science & Technology application oriented programme, ICT (Information Communication Technology), Remote Sensing and Space Application technology in resource mapping and developmental planning, Disaster Magement etc and on the need for scientific collaboration towards a perspective Regiol Plan for Science & Technology and ICT in NER. State-wise Review of ongoing NEC funded projects was also taken up.

Member, NEC, CK Das highlighted a number of problems which hinder the development of Northeastern States and stressed upon the adoption of adequate R&D and Space Application technologies for boosting productivity in various fields and agriculture and allied in particular. He also stressed on the urgent need to adopt tissue culture technology for increase productivity as well as cropping intensity for ensuring food security in the region.

He also appealed the scientists to come up with innovative ideas.

More than 50 participants from the various organizations, departments and institutions attended the meeting.

Two minutes silence in honour of the departed soul of former President Dr APJ Abdul Kalam was also observed before the start of the meeting.
