NEDF meet against AFSPA

IMPHAL, March 20:  Representatives of the North East Dialouge Forum are not happening that the situation in Manipur where the Armed Forces (Special Posers) Act, 958 is in force is sorsening. A meeting of the NEDF was held yesterday at Malom in Imphal. Representatives from Assam, Meghalaya, Aruchal Pradesh, Tripura, galand and Mzoram attended the meeting. The theme of the meeting this time was “The Draconian Law- Armed Forces (Special Poswers) Act, 1958”.

The speakers were not happy that the government has spurned the Justie Jeevan Reddy Commission report on the AFSPA. They also demanded the release of Irom Sharmila who has been on fast unto death for more than 18 years. Various aspects of the harassments faced by the people under this Act were discussed.

The meeting also resolved to submit a memorandum to the prime minister urging him to repeal the AFSPA and release Irom Sharmila. It will also demand a special investigation team probe into the massacre of 86 persons in Assam in Decembeer.
