JORHAT: Three marauding jumbos demolished seven huts, including five shops, at Neematighat and injured three persons on Sunday night. Biburam Kalita had a narrow escape. He was in his shop when a wild elephant entered the shop searching for the rice kept in the shop. A forest team arrived on time and chased the three jumbos towards Kartik Chapori, said Tonkeswar Gayan, a forest official on Monday.

According to forest department sources, the three jumbos were separated from a herd of 150 marauding jumbos which are suspected to have come from Sivasagar and are loitering in the areas between Sivasagar, Jorhat, Majuli, Kaziranga and Titabor, said Dipak Bora, the Range Officer of Jorhat Forest Range.
