NEHU assistant registrar dies in road mishap

SHILLONG, Jan 11: In a tragic road accident, North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) assistant registrar Jaya Bhattarcharjee lost her life in the early morning today. Two of her colleagues also sustained serious injuries in the accident.

Police sources said the accident took place when the vehicle they were travelling rammed into a Sumo coming from the opposite direction near the Military Hospital. Police said Jaya along with her two colleagues were returning from Mylliem at around 7 am.

47-year-old Bhattacharjee was also a part time news anchor in Doordarshan and All India Radio (AIR)

The two injured have been identified as Dr Subrata Choudhry, a lecturer in the Kiang ngbah Government College, Jowai and Dr Shyamnda Bhattacharjee, an official of the North Eastern Council (NEC). The two were immediately shifted to a city based hospital.

Speaking to newsmen a NEHU official said that Jaya and the two others had went out in the early hours of Monday morning at around 4.30AM to see the frost of Mylliem.

The mortal remains of Jaya Bhattarcharjee have been taken to her residence at Ferndale, Rapsang complex opposite SP office after post mortem was conducted.

Meanwhile, NEHU Vice Chancellor Prof SK Srivastava said, “This is a huge loss for us since she was one of the finest officers in the university.”
