NEHU teachers meet Smriti Irani

SHILLONG, March 30: The Union Human Resource Development (HRD) Minister Smriti Zubin Irani has agreed to replace the present system of assessment of teachers in Indian Universities. According to North Eastern Hills University Teachers’ Association (NEHUTA) the present system of assessment of teachers for open post selection/ Career Advancement Scheme (CAS) promotion under Academic Performance Indicator (API) method will be replaced by one in which the assessment will focus and emphasize on teaching inputs, contribution to curriculum development.

According to NEHUTA this commitment was given by Irani during a meeting on Tuesday. The association also informed that with regards to research work, the HRD Minister agreed that the assessment will cover inputs made over a longer stipulated tenure of service in place of year wise contribution.

“A meeting has been slated to filize this on April 4 and the new rule will be officially declared within a week,” the NEHUTA on Wednesday informed.

Meanwhile, on the demand for exempting pre-2009 Ph.D holders of NET qualification the Ministry has accepted the exemption of applicants as a necessary prerequisite for their entry in the teaching service. The NEHUTA said that the official notification in this regard will also be issued soon.

Moreover, the association was also informed that on the Seventh Pay Commission & UGC Pay Review Committee, the recommendations have been sent to the Fince Ministry.

“Notwithstanding the fact that official declaration on the details of the modalities are yet to be seen in black and white, these announcements sound promising in addressing the problems that have plagued the institution of higher learning in the country since the promulgation of the 2010 UGC Regulation,” NEHUTA said.
