NESO leaders meet Meghalaya Governor, demands ILP implementation

SHILLONG, June 4: Leaders of the North East Students’ Organisation (NESO) today met Meghalaya Governor V Shanmugathan and submitted a memorandum to him.

During the meeting with Shanmugathan, the NESO team led by its chairman Samuel Jyrwa urged the centre to implement the Inner Line Permit (ILP) in the Northeast.

“The issue of influx matter of serious concern for us,” Jyrwa said

Moreover, the NESO also demanded that the tiol Register of Citizens (NRC) should be updated in the entire region taking 1971 as the base year.

At the moment the NRC is being updated only in Assam.

“The NRC should be updated in the whole north eastern region taking 1971 as the base year,” Jyrwa said.

Jyrwa also said that the NESO wanted the repeal of draconian laws like the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) 1958.

Apart from these demands, the NESO also urged the centre through the Governor to come out clear and spell out the objective of the “Act East Policy”.

“We don’t want that the northeast to be just the gateway to other neigbouring countries,” the NESO chairman said.
