New Ambubachi Attraction, The Kinner Akhara In Kamakhya Devalaya

STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI: A group of kinner (Eunuch) arrived at the historic Kamakhya Devalaya for the grand Ambubachi mela and brings with it a fresh perspective about the third gender, a topic often shoved under the rug. The group includes a mechanical engineer among them, who shares her woes about not being able to face a job situation.

Prachal Singh, a 27 year old kinner and an engineer who graduated from Dilkap College of Engineering, Mumbai, in 2014, while speaking to The Sentinel commented that she went through school as a boy and identifies as a sanyasi now. “I want to have a job real bad but the society segregation prevents me from stepping out. I would gladly take on a private job as well if I get the right environment”, she said.

Maa Bhabani Nath, a kinner and an Aam Admi Party member, who contested from Number 52 Allahabad district said, “As long as the family members are supportive, we have a family but most of our kind are cast aside. Kinners are both born as such and some understand their true identity after the age of 13, when the hormonal changes occur. As we are not able to bear children, hold jobs or get married, we are ousted from the society. Things should change, schools and colleges should include the third gender option to make it easier for our kind.” There are 50 members in the Kamakhya Kinner Akhara at the Ambubachi camp this year.
