New scheme to quench Nongrah’s thirst for water

SHILLONG, Nov 26: After many years of suffering, people of Nongrah will now be able to enjoy ample water supply from the new water supply scheme.

An initiative of UDP legislator from Nongthymmai constituency Dr Jemino Mawthoh, the administrative approval of this PHE water supply scheme (pumping scheme) was approved on 31st March 2017 and the drill work has already reach about 780 feet in depth and the quantum of water expected to generate through this source is about 5,000 litres per hour and the ultimate population covered under this scheme will be 1,2021 and rate of supply 70 LPCD, total water demand 753626 litres per day and water demand to be covered under Phase I (spring, stream and bore well no. 1) is 5,27,537 liters per day and the expected target to complete this work is one year.

“Owing to hard work of Chief Engineer Manbha Alia, including engineers of PHE department in charge of the Nongrah area, executive committee of the Dorbar Shnong Nongrah and landowners including Doris Pyngrope, Civil Pyngrope and Thriar Kharmon who give their lands for this project in Nongrah, including for setting up of the tanks, etc, this project became a reality,” Mawthoh said, while informing that the exact amount sanctioned for this scheme is Rs 5,92,73,000.

He said after he was elected as MLA of the constituency he had tried several ways to resolve drinking water scarcity at Nongrah village. Despite most of the localities falling under Nonthymmai constituency and under the Greater Shillong Water Supply Scheme (GSWS) Phase III, Nongrah and Lapalang were excluded from the GSWS.

Mawthoh further said that earlier he had try to deliver the scheme in the area through the tiol Rural Drinking Water Mission, but failed and was filly able to meet the people requirements through this PHE water scheme.
