New steps to develop chess in Assam

GUWAHATI, May 3: The Adhoc Committee of the Assam Chess Association has decided to take few new  steps to develop the game in the state. Among the plans are reduction of players registration fees, introduction of scholarship, in the form of free education, among the needy players who will win title in Inter District meet.

The members of the newly constituted Adhoc Committee of the Assam Chess Association for the first time meet with the officials of the different District Chess Association and a detail discussion on further development of game in Assam was held in this meeting. Biswajit Bharadwaj, the secretary of the Adhoc Committee, later informed the media on the decisions taken in the meeting. It was decided that state team for the forthcoming tiol Chess Championship will be selected from 38th All Assam Chess Championship which was held at Cachar few months back." We have also decided to provide scholarship in the form of free education to the needy players who will emerge champion in U-7 to U-15 categories, said Biswajit.

He also added, “ The players registration fees has been reduced and from now on wards it will be Rs 50-per year. Different charges, related to holding competitions, were also reduced so that there is no extra burden on the district units at the time of organizing a tourment."

The annual calendar was also filized in today's meeting. This year Jugal Kishore Newatia Memorial Chess championship will be held from June 22. The meet will be followed by two more competition-GTC Rating Chess Championship and another one at Assam Jatiya Vidyalaya in July. Duliajan will host the next North East Chess Championship in the month of August.
