NGO raises demand for reming road after Kalika Prasad

Silchar, May 8: Members of the central committee of Youth Against Social Evils (YASE) have urged the Deputy Commissioner of Cachar, S Viswathan, IAS, to take necessary steps with regards to reming of Circuit House Road or Central Road of this town in the me of Late Kalika Prasad Bhattacharjee, the famous Bengali folk artiste and researcher who passed away in the month of March. They have mentioned it in a letter addressed to the DC Cachar that District Library auditorium is situated at Circuit House Road and the auditorium is also a very popular and common platform for the cultural and performing artistes, so the road has significance from the cultural point of view.

 YASE members have also stated that the house of the late singer is at Central Road of this town and so it would be suitable and befitting if Central Road is med after late Kalika Prasad. The late singer, who was also the lead vocalist of the famous Dohar band, took Bengali folk songs to new height. His oeuvre comprises innumerable songs and compositions which covered various genres of Bengali folk songs. The me and fame that he achieved in a short span of his life will remain unparalleled for decades to come. A copy of the letter has also been addressed to MP Sushmita Dev, MLA Dilip Kumar Paul, Deputy Speaker of the Assam Assembly and Niharendra rayan Thakur, chairperson, Silchar Municipal Board.

 Late Kalika Prasad Bhattacharjee lost his life in a fatal road accident which created a void in the world of Bengali folk song. The acclaimed singer was on his way to perform at a school in West Bengal’s Birbhum district. He along with his other band members was coming from Burdwan district when their SUV was hit by a truck which was speeding from behind. Unfortutely, the car fell into a ditch. Though he was rescued from the vehicle, but he could not be saved and doctors at Burdwan Medical College and Hospital declared him brought dead. He popularized folk songs from rural Bengal. He had also lent his voice for films like Bhuban Majhi, Jaatishwar and Moner Manush.
