NGO temporarily suspends agitatiol programme

Doomdooma, Nov 10: Baghjan Gaon Milanjyoti Sangha, a registered NGO along with General public of the region, which had threatened to  resort to oil blockade agitation from November 10 in protest against non- compliance of directives of  pollution control measures issued by Ministry of Environment and Forest ( MoEF), Government of India, handing over of oil- fields to private companies and in not adopting safety measures for protection of lives of people as well as for non- fulfilment of various demands including providing employment to unemployed youths has temporarily suspended the agitatiol programmes on receipt of invitation from Oil India LTD(OIL) for a discussion on the issues on November 17.

In a statement to the press signed by the President Barun Moran and the Secretary Janto Moran, it has been alleged that Oil India Limited (OIL) which had been extracting oil since the year 2000, has not adopted any safety measures for security of people and protection of Environment, Bio-diversity of the region. Instead to their callous neglect, OIL authority has been discharging the waste  products of oil wells to nearby Dangori river thus endangering the various types of aquatic lives like  fishes, turtles and dolphins.

At the same time, the large sounds of the machines engaged in the oil- wells greatly disturbs the peaceful academic environment of  study. The statement further alleged that the non-compliance of the directives of MoEF came to light after the meeting of Pollution Control Board of Assam, Oil India Limited (OIL) and Circle Officer (CO) in presence of Additiol Deputy Commissioner (ADC), Tinsukia held in the office of C.O.,  Doomdooma Revenue Circle on September 15.  After holding of the meeting,  Pollution Control Board Officials  paid a visit to the places where  oil- wells were located.  It was only after the inspection of the site that the Pollution Control Board lodged written complaint to OIL about no- compliance of environmental protective measures.  But allegedly  no follow up measures has been taken up by Pollution Control Board of Assam for compliance on the part of OIL thus aggravating the situation  on one hand and enhancing the public ire on the other.
