NGT's ban on coal mining

Shillong, Aug 26: The Jaintia Coal Miners & Dealers Association (JCMDA) has written to the Chairman of Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) to convene a Special Session to discuss the situation arising out of the NGT ban on coal mining. According to the JCMDA, the aftermath of the ban has affected the entire populace of the State, in particular the Jaintia Hills districts. In the letter, to the JHADC chairman, JCMDA president Balios Swer stated that during the special session, the MDCs can discuss, debate and pass a resolution so as to provide remedial measures to the present impasse.  "The suggested proposal to convene a special session of the Council is also to dwell at length on the issue pertaining to the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution that guaranteed to safe guard the interest and welfare of the indigenous people of the State," Swer said.  The JCMDA pointed out that the ban has brought untold sufferings to the people. "Many people were left unemployed, daily wage earners were all left high and dry, some school children had to discontinue their studies, some children was even reported to have been sold," the JCMDA said.
