No bail for GCDC chairman Prabhat Kalita

From a Correspondent

JORHAT, Feb 3: The release of General Classes Development Council (GCDC) chairman Prabhat Kalita from jail remains in the dark after the Sessions Judge, Jorhat rejected his bail petition on Friday.

The sessions judge, Jorhat rejected the bail petition of Kalita after hearing both sides on Friday. The court had called for the case diary of the case from the investigating officer of police and that was submitted before the court by police. On perusal of the case diary and considering the strong objection from government side represented by the public prosecutor of Jorhat, the court rejected the bail petition.

Kalita is in judicial custody at Jorhat Central Jail since he was arrested in Delhi on December 20.

Public prosecutor of Jorhat, Mukti Ranjan Barooah said, “I have vehemently raised my objection on allowing the bail prayer of the GCDC chairman Prabhat Kalita. I submitted that if he is allowed to go on bail, there is every possibility of hampering or tempering evidence of the case by the accused. Accordingly, the court was pleased to consider my submission and rejected the bail prayer.”

The Jorhat Deputy Commissioner lodged a complaint against Kalita and Golaghat district Development Commissioner and ADC Anjav Chaliha alleging that Chaliha issued cheques worth more than Rs. 1 crore in favour of Kalita as ADC Jorhat when he was actually posted as the ADC of Golaghat. Kalita allegedly withdrew the funds and siphoned them off.

Kalita was arrested by Jorhat police at a private lodge in Delhi on December 20. He was found absconding after the case of alleged corruption of GCDC fund was registered against him.
