No cess on green tea leaves : Assam Tea

STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI, Oct 3: The small tea growers of Assam might have heaved a sigh of relief when the State Assembly has passed a taxation Bill, thereby waiving cess on green tea leaves.

The State Assembly on Wednesday passed the Assam Taxation (on Specified Lands) (Amendment) Bill, 2018 and paved the way for the waiver of the 10-paise cess which small tea growers in the State have been paying against per kg of green tea leaves.

Soon after coming to power in the State, the BJP-led coalition did promise to waive cess on green tea leaves in phases and in three years. Originally the cess was 40 paise per kg of green tea leaves. However, after coming to power, the three-party coalition waived 15 paise in the first year, followed by the waiver of another 15 paise in the year next. With the waiver of 10 paise cess against per kg of green tea leaves on Wednesday, the cess is zero now.

State Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said: “After the waiver, green leaf cess to be paid by small tea growers of the State is zero. This waiver is going to benefit small tea growers with less than 40 hectares of land. This waiver of cess will be effective from the date of its notification.”
