SHILLONG, April 5:  In what could be construed as a tactful approval to bootlegging by Urkaliar village council through a delicately placed press statement issued on Thursday, it is apparent that the bootleggers can run their business till 10 p.m. The office of Dorbar Shnong Urkalair issued a statement that after a meeting called by the in-charge of Nongmynsong police outpost in the presence of Church leaders  that a unimous decision was taken that there should not be any business activities after 10 pm.

While sale of liquor in Shillong into the late hours is known to all, going by the version of the Dorbar Shnong, the role of the police is questioned by many.  Speaking on the issue Superentendent of Police, East Khasi Hill, Davies Nester Marak said, “My officer convened a meeting with the traditiol institution, church elders and others to tackle the mece of boot legging. He held the meeting but was not a sigtory to any such decision.”

Marak further informed that on Wednesday his men seized around 500 litres of illicit liquor. “We are serious that any one found in such activity will be booked under the Excise Act and other provisions of the law,” he added.
