Shillong, May 20: Even though the state unit of the Congress has accepted the Tura by-polls defeat as a body blow to the party, yet it has ruled out any possibility to remove Mukul Sangma from the post of Chief Minister immediately.

Congress candidate Dikanshi D Shira lost to NPP candidate Conrad K Sangma by a margin of more than 1,93,000 votes.

President of the Meghalya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) DD Lapang told this correspondent, “Let us assume that Conrad has been chosen for his caliber but as a party we have to carry out a post mortem”.

Commenting on the outcome of the recent parliamentary polls, Lapang admitted that it was a setback for the party.

He added that the party as a whole should graciously accepted the defeat and virtually ruled out any fresh attempt to remove Chief Minister Mukul Sangma.

“Failure is another pillar to success and we will bounce back after the introspection on the debacle,” stated Lapang.

By virtue of being the Chairman of the North East India Congress Committee (NEICC), Lapang conceded defeat in Assam, even as he said that the spirit of accommodation to new ideas will change the fortune of the party in the region.
