No NRC In Other States Limited To Assam Only: Centre

New Delhi: In a significant development New Delhi on Tuesday has said that NRC will be limited to Assam only. Disclosing this in the Lok Sabha, Minister of State Affairs Hansraj Ahir said that the government is not proposing to extend the National Registrar of Citizens (NRC) to states other than Assam. In a written reply submitted in the Parliament Ahir stated that the exercise to update NRC 1951 is being conducted under the special provisions in respect of State of Assam under the Citizenship Act, 1955 and the Citizenship rules, 2003. “At present, there is no proposal to extend the NRC to states other than Assam,” he said.

The statement given by Ahir in the Parliament have sidelined all speculations of favouing a similar NRC across India, especially in BJP-ruled states. Ever since the NRC process has been rolling in Assam, the demand for a similar NRC was coming from several states.

Ahir said this while replying to a question from Trinamool Congress MP Prasoon Banerjee in the Parliament.

In the forefront demanding NRC is Yogi Adityanath of Uttar Pradesh. He was quoted saying that NRC is very much necessary to wipe out illegal foreigners. IPFT in Tripura is also demanding NRC in Tripura.

Similarly Delhi BJP is also demanding NRC in the national capital.
