Silchar: The employees of Cachar Paper Mill, affiliated to Hindustan Paper Corporation, passing through severe financial hardship due to non payment of salary for the last 23 months, have decided to boycott the ensuing Panchayat polls and if no solution is evolved to reopen the shut down mill might even keep themselves away from voting in the Parliamentary elections also.

In a statement, the Association of Cachar Paper Mill permanent and causal workers has been pressing for the revival of the mill, but except assurances, no positive action has been initiated. In the meantime, under the mental stress and due to starvation, 38 employees have died, claimed the Association.

Manabendra Chakraborty, chief convener, HPC Paper Mills Revival Action Committee, said the Parliament had approved Rs.90 crore in the month of August 2018 as notified by the Ministry of Finance, Department of Economic Affairs, Government of India, for payment of salary, wages and other statutory dues due to the employees of HPC. Sadly enough, the payment has not been made. In protest against the non payment of salary for a long time, the employees of Cachar Paper Mill have taken the most unfortunate decision, a step that they have to take under the exigencies of circumstances.
