Non-functional Traffic Lights Increase Possibility of Road Accidents in Dibrugarh

A Correspondent

Dibrugarh: That road mishap is one of the biggest causes of premature death is known to all. Despite this realization, Dibrugarh Municipality seems to be giving a snub to it.

Traffic signals at several traffic booths in the town have not been functioning for the past many days. Yet, nothing has been done about it by the authorities concerned. Even the traffic booths at some of the busiest junctions of the town, including Thanacharali and Gabharupathar, have been turned a blind eye to, thereby putting the lives of the commuters in jeopardy. With the automatic lights going out of order, some traffic policemen are seen trying to control the traffic manually, although such a practice has its own share of problems. For instance, manual controlling has often been seen causing confusion among the commuters regarding the signals.

Such confusion increases the likelihood of road accidents. Moreover, taking undue advantage of the situation, some reckless drivers are flouting the traffic rules, and blaming their brazenness on the non-functioning traffic lights. Most hard-hit has been the general public, which is increasingly questioning the usage of property tax being paid by them to the local bodies for maintenance of such things.
