North East Institute of Advanced Studies brings positive news in New Year

Mission-1000 launched for transforming youths of Assam

GUWAHATI: On eve of the New Year, reputed education institute of Assam, North East Institute of Advanced Studies (Northeast-IAS) launched an ambitious programme, named Mission-1000, which aims to train 300,000 youths of Assam in five years’ time by providing advanced skilled development and competitive examination trainings. The Mission- 1000 also targets to produce 1000 skilled-trained and competitive youths from each district of Assam, amounting to 33,000 trained up and competitive youths. While launching the Mission- 1000, Vice Chairman of Assam Planning Commission, Dipok Kumar Borthakur stated that Assam needs a comprehensive planning for youth development and the Mission -1000 is the first step in that direction. 40 distinguished personalities of Assam such as Senior journalist Samudra Gupta Kashayp, Principal K C Das College Hrikresh Baruah, Rajiv Prakash Baruah, Parva Baruah, Retired IAS Saline Nath, Director of Northeast-IAS, Sankar Ray attended the event. Founder of the Northeast-IAS presented the Vision of Mission-1000 to the gathering and stated that Assam and Assamese people are struggling with numerous socio-political and economic issues, ranging from demographic transitions to lack of industrial growth; politics of identity crisis to poor agriculture productions, weak infrastructure development to distortion in higher education system. He stressed upon that to tackle and mitigate these age-old problems of Assam, “We need strong and able leadership at all level from (bottom to top) and particularly, we need a breed of Assamese bureaucrats, clerks, technical staffs, who could emphatically understand the problems and find solutions.”

While delivering the opening remarks, Director of Northeast-IAS Sankar Ray stated that the latest census of Assam (2011) reports that there are more than 1.5 Million educated youths in Assam, which are unemployed. It is further reported by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India (2015-16) that Assam produces approximately 2, 17,652 numbers of graduates each year. At the secondary education and higher secondary level, Assam produces approximately, 140,000 youth each year, which adds up to 400,000 educated youth. These are the demographic dividends and assets of Assam. Senior Journalist, Samudra Gupta Kashayp expressed his concern that out of these 400,000 numbers of educated youths, only 20% youths are ‘competitive youths’. A set recommendations were also derived from the deliberation and it was resolved that a systemic awareness campaign shall be initiated in collaboration with state government by organizing camps, workshops or seminars in schools, college and universities on the different lucrative careers in the central government departments including skilled based trainings. Recommendation was also adopted to reviving ITIs. There are more than 28 Industrial Training Institutes in Assam and most of these ITIs are under-performing. Northeast-IAS will partner with the Government of Assam to support in reviving these ITIs with technical assistance. The objective of reviving these ITIs is to provide quality and job-oriented training and accelerators supports to youths at district level.
