LAKHIMPUR: Due to torrential rain in the State of Arunachal Pradesh during the last three days, along with Lakhimpur and Dhemaji districts, the water level has risen in the catchment area of Ranganadi Hydro Electric Plant (RHEP) located at Yazali, operated by North Eastern Electric Power Corporation (NEEPCO) Limited.

As a consequence, the RHEP management was compelled to release water from its reservoir on Wednesday. Excess water from the RHEP dam was released on the day through its Radial Gate No. 4, by opening it 100mm from 1.35pm, 300mm from 3.15pm, 400mm from 4.15pm. However, the amount of released water subsided from 6.30 pm. Since that point of time, the excess water had been released through the mentioned gate by opening it 300mm and it was again subsided to 100mm at 7 pm. Opening the gate at this point, excess water had been released from the dam of the plant till the time when this report was filed. The impact of the released water in River Ranganadi was yet not reported.

NEEPCO on April 24 closed all gates of Ranganadi dam which were opened from February 9 for releasing water from the dam in order to dewater its reservoir under a total plant shutdown programme. Though the Gate No. 5 was re-opened for four days to maintain a particular level of water in the reservoir during the filling of the tunnel after the end of shutdown programme, it was closed on April 28.
