North Lakhimpur Municipal Board in Flux

* No confidence motion against BJP Chairman

LAKHIMPUR: Lakhimpur witnessed a dramatic change in North Lakhimpur Municipal Board on Friday. As per the dramatic development, the BJP led Municipal Board suddenly turned to a minority following an incident of withdrawing support by an AGP Ward Member. This Ward Member, Deepa Singh, elected from Ward No. 6 joined in Congress quitting AGP after she had withdrawn her support to the BJP-AGP alliance Municipal Bord of North Lakhimpur. As a result of it, the number of Congress Ward Members increased up to 9 out of fourteen membered Municipal Board. She joined in the party at Rajiv Bhawan of Lakhimpur on Friday in the presence of Lakhimpur District Congress Committee’s Administrative General Secretary Pradip Gogoi, Organizing Secretary Dhan Mahammad Mahila Congress President Hafiza Begum and many other congress leaders. Winning the majority, the Congress Ward Members moved No-Confidence Motion against the BJP Chairman Samiran Konwar and fixed a dead line to him to prove his majority within seven days. Anther two Ward Members- AGP Ward Member cum Vice Chairman of the Municipal Board Renuka Burhagohain and BJP Ward Member Milan Chandra Devnath also extended their support to the No-Confidence motion. They already submitted the copies of the No-Confidence Motion to Lakhimpur DC Dr. Jeevan B as well as to the Municipal Administration Department under the State Government. It is noteworthy that six Ward Members of the Municipal Board, on October 1, submitted complaints to the DC against the existing Chairman demanding him to remove Samiran Konwar from his office. They expressed their resentment against the Chairman alleging his autocratic attitude with regard to the implementation of the developmental schemes with the funds allocated under Fourth Assam Finance Commission.
