Now Namghar Looted In Guwahati City

GUWAHATI: Yet another shocker! Thieves took advantage of the heavy rains as an effect of cyclone Fani and the consequent power failure to loot a Namghar in the Uzan Bazar area in Guwahati. The incident took place in the wee hours on Sunday. What is even more shocking is that thieves continue to have the upper hand in looting temples and namghars in the State.

The Borkhelia Sarbojanin Mahapurushiya Dihingia Namghar at Sati Radhika Shanti Road in the Uzan Bazar area in Guwahati is barely 500 metres from Latasil police station. It was raining heavily on Saturday-Sunday night. To cap it all, there was power failure in the area. Taking the advantage of the downpour and power failure the thieves looted the namghar.

The theft came to light at 4.30 this morning when a woman cleaning the namghar show the broken lock hanging in its main gate. She made no delay to inform those managing the namghar of the incident. The thieves broke one of the two iron rings holding the lock in the main gate. They, however, broke open the lock that was held in the grill inside and looted.

The goods stolen, according to the namghar managing committee, include two flowers made of gold and as many flowers made of silver, two golden chains and a few thousands from the donation box. The box was broken.

The police, on the other hand, said that even as an FIR has been lodged, the list of stolen goods has not been completed as yet by the complainant. More stolen items are still being added to the list. The police, however, said that they have registered a case (141/19 under section 380) in connection with the looting. They have started the investigation.

According to the police, the namghar has no CCTV cameras fitted in it. However, Sati Radhika Shanti Road leading to the namghar has CCTV cameras fitted at two places. “Now we’re trying to see the footage of the two CCTVs,” the police said. No arrest has been made so far.

The people of the locality say that the development is daring and shocking. The Ugratara temple was looted barely five months ago, and looting this namghar which is barely 500 metres from the police station now shows that the thieves have the upper hand, a few residents of the locality say. They also alleged that there is no night patrolling in the area.
