NRC: 600 Objections Only, As Many As 25 Lakh Claims!

NRC: 600 Objections Only, As Many As 25 Lakh Claims!

GUWAHATI: There are claimants in lakhs against only a few objectors. This is even after the Supreme Court of India allowing people to lodge objections in deputy commissioners’ offices also against people of suspected nationality appearing in the complete draft NRC.

Barely a week is to go for lodging objections against wrongful inclusion of names in NRC. The extended date for lodging claims and objections is December 31, 2018. So far only 600 objections have been lodged. However, the number of claims has gone up to 25 lakh.Over 40.07 lakh names of applicants have not appeared in the complete draft NRC. The relaxation ensured by the Supreme Court of India in lodging objections, it seems, has not evoked much response from prospective objectors. According to information received from various districts in the State, the process of lodging objections against wrongful inclusion of names in complete draft NRC is yet to pick up. On the contrary, the process of lodging claims has picked up its momentum. Most of the claims were lodged in the second week of December. Maybe, former last date for claims and objections – December 15, 2018 – had its impact on claimants.

Meanwhile, talking to The sentinel AASU (All Assam Students’ Union) general secretary Lurinjyoti Gogoi said: “The apex court has allowed to lodge objections in district headquarters (DC offices) also – following a request from us. NRC update following a directive from the Supreme Court of India is a rare opportunity for the people of Assam to have a correct NRC. The people of the State should avail such a chance to the fullest to get rid of the problem of people of suspected nationalities once and for all. We must not let this chance go unutilized. We appeal to the people of Assam yet again to avail this chance.”
