NRC: Dispur Allows Biometric Collection At Nearest Centres

GUWAHATI: The Home and Political Department of the State government has issued circular allowing persons making claims and objections over the complete draft National Register of Citizens (NRC) to give their biometric impressions at the NRC Sewa Kendras nearest to their places of residence. This has been communicated to all the Deputy Commissioners (DCs) and the NRC State Coordinator as well.

The move is a breather especially for those persons who have already appeared for their claims or objections hearings at various NRC Sewa Kendras across the State but whose biometric impressions are yet to be collected. The move was taken by the State government in view of the fact that of late there has been an increase in the number of people yet to give their biometric samples. There are reports that at many NRC Sewa Kendras, though the hearings of the claims and objections were already carried out but the collection of biometric samples could not be carried out simultaneously at the adjacent biometric enrollment centres. As a result, the biometric sample collection cases have been accumulating.

Besides, many people had to appear for the hearing of the ‘claims and objections’ exercise at places quite distant from their present places of residence. It would be harassment for them if they have to again proceed to those NRC Sewa Kendras (where they had appeared for the processes) to submit their biometric impressions.

Altogether 36.2 lakh people have applied in the claims section while objections were raised against 2 lakh people.

The Supreme Court has already allowed the collection of biometric samples of such people. The Ministry of Home affairs (MHA) has also specific mention of the biometric collection process in its ‘Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) on hearing of claims and objections over the complete draft NRC.
