NRC (National Register of Citizens) Authority Disposing Objection Cases Sans Objectors

GUWAHATI: With less than a month left for publication of the final NRC (National Register of Citizens) slated on July 31, the NRC authorities are currently engaged in disposing on its own about two lakh cases related to ‘Objections’ where majority of objectors remained absent during the ‘Hearing’ process that concluded on June 15.

The National Register of Citizens authorities earlier directed that in case of absence of objector, hearing will be disposed ex-parte. The DOs (Disposing Officers) are required to record if the objector was present or hearing was conducted ex-parte in absence of the objector concerned.

Prior to disposing such cases, the DOs carry out verification of the relevant papers of the persons against whom objections were raised as to the inclusion of their names in the complete draft National Register of Citizens published on July 30, 2018. Then the DOs forward the cases with their comments or opinions to the Circle Officer (CO) or Deputy Commissioner (DC) concerned. Next, the CO or the DC critically examines the Disposing Officer’s opinions. And, if everything is found in order, the case is finally disposed off.

During the hearing process on such objections, the NRC authorities had called both the objectors and the persons against whom objections were raised. However, the objectors remained absent in many such instances during the critical hearing on objection process.

Meanwhile, the National Register of Citizens authorities is also carrying out an internal exercise of correcting names that were already included in the complete draft National Register of Citizens. However before making the corrections sought by the concerned applicants, the National Register of Citizens personnel are verifying the original applications of the persons concerned.
