NRC update: Darrang DC stresses need for creating flawless register

MANGALDAI, March 14:  Darrang district Deputy Commissioner Manoj Kumar has emphasized on the need of creating a complete and flawless NRC in the district.

Addressing the first community-level meeting on tiol Register of Citizens (NRC) update in the district here at the District Library auditorium, he said that the process of NRC is neither a political nor an administrative matter.

"It is totally a matter of the apex court and every official involved is accountable with the legal bindings. It is a time-bound phenomenon and any obstruction to the process would be treated as illegal," Kumar said.

 Out of the different stakeholders in the process, he said that the role of the panchayat secretaries, called the Local Registrars of Citizenship Registration (LRCR) was very vital at the grassroot level.

The meeting organised by the Darrang district administration with the slogan, "A long-felt dream is going to be transformed into the reality. Let us create a new chapter in the history of Assam" aimed at awareness generation about the progress of ongoing update process of the much-awaited NRC in Assam.  The meeting was attended by a jam-packed audience including all the heads of the department, members of the three-tier Panchayati Raj, social workers and media persons.

Earlier, participating in the meeting, Dr Bijoya Choudhury, Additiol Deputy Commissioner and Bibhas Modi, Project Director, DRDA, explained the role of the grassroot stake holders and about the progress of the process in the district.

They informed that proposal for setting up as many as 80 NRC 'Sewa Kendras' (NSK) in the district is likely to be accorded necessary government approval soon.  Out of the total 80 NSKs, 66 will be set up in GP office buildings to help the grass- root people of the district, they added. They meeting also discussed about the Legacy Data based on the NRC of 1951, Citizenship Act of 1955 and Citizenship Rule of 2003 and the electoral rolls published before the midnight of March 24 of 1971 and twelve specified identification documents necessary to produce during application process.

The meeting was also attended by all the top officials of the district including CEO, Darrang Zila Parisad, Additiol Deputy Commissioners, Election Officer, Mangaldai and Circle Officers of the respective revenue circles. Juri Phukan appointed as Dima Hasao DC
