Jatindra Nath Bayan, the serving Principal of Udalguri Sangeet Mahavidyalaya and a retired teacher of Udalguri HS School, breathed his last at a private hospital in Guwahati on July 18 last after prolonged illness. He was 83. Bayan was closely associated with a number of social and cultural organizations of Udalguri  since their inception. He was born in 1935 at Sarugaon Baradi in Barpeta district and was appointed as an assistant teacher at Udalguri HS School in 1964 and sought voluntary retirement in 1995 to engage himself full-time in music and songs. He was later appointed as Principal of Udalguri Sangeet Mahavidyalaya. He was an ideal teacher and devotee of music. He also played a torchbearer’s role during the historic Assam Movement. He was a lifetime member of the Axam Xahitya Xabha and served as president and secretary of Udalguri Sahitya Sabha.

He was also conferred a lifetime achievement award by the Asom Sanskritik Mahasabhaat Nalbari in 2017 and the Udalguri Regional Students’ Union of AASU also honoured him with the Sudhakantha Dr. Bhupen Hazarika Samanvay Bota in 2015. His death was widely mourned. He leaves behind his wife, two daughters and a host of relatives and well-wishers.
