Officers, local people participate in trekking

SHILLONG, Feb 5: Officers from Meghalaya Tourism Department along with local people of the area of Wahkhen village took part in a one day trekking to U Mawryngkhang— one of the mammoth and tallest tural erecting stone allocated in the hills and gorge of Wahkhen village in East Khasi Hills about one hour by foot.

Organised by Tourism Trekking Team (TTT) Wahkhen, on Saturday, people including children, young and old both men and women thronged the Mawryngkhang site to have an opportunity to set foot on the top of this wonder and tallest stone for the very first time.

Public Information Officer from State Tourism department led by Phillip Tariang flagged off the trekking.  Wahkhen village is about 50 km on the right side. About 6 km after crossing Laitlyngkot village in East Khasi Hills, there is a juncture called Pomlum village which is 15 km to the right side  on the way to Shillong-Pynursla road.

The team under the leadership of BK Khongjirem and Sr S Malngiang along with 20 members, had recently decided to promote the tourism in the village after the land owners of the area have wilfully handed over the land site to the Team to mage and run for promoting the tourism in the village which will benefit the local people and the state as well.  

During the day, land owners, Slida Khonglein and Simen Khonglein declared that they have decided to hand over to the team for that area for this purpose. Mythology unfolded by forefathers said that this stone is one of the King among stones who has defeated war against all stones of that area and won the battle against U Mawpator from other kingdom.
