Bongaigaon, May 24: Another death in a road mishap in NH-31 of Bartaloa area under Dhaligaon PS of Chirang district has created panic among people.

According to local people, Abdul Gafur (55), a resident of Ankorbari area of Chirang district, was riding his bicycle at 7 am on Tuesday when an oil tanker (AS-18-A-4283) hit him at Bartaloa near the flyover of the four-lane highway (NH-31). “He was immediately taken to the nearby JSB Hospital of Kajalgaon where he was declared dead,” local people said.

The local people blamed the NHAI for this incident. “Construction of this flyover is faulty. There is only one tunnel under this flyover to cross the road. But a large number of people use this tunnel for which this tunnel is crowded. The people of this area had demanded several times for construction of one more tunnel under this flyover. We have staged demonstrations and submitted memoranda to NHAI several times. We also submitted a memorandum to Union PWD Minister Nitin Gadkari, the former Chief Minister of Assam and also to Sarbanda Sonowal. We also registered a case against this in Gauhati High Court. But we never received any fruitful response in this regard. This accident which occurred today is not the single case of accident here. Many accidents have occurred here due to faulty construction of this flyover,” the local people alleged.
