One per cent voters opt for NOTA in Assam in the Lok Sabha poll 2019

GUWAHATI: Nearly one in every 100 voters in Assam has opted to vote NOTA – none of the above – in the Lok Sabha poll 2019. NOTA’s is the last key in the EVM.

The highest number of voters opted to press the NOTA key in the State is from Dibrugarh parliamentary constituency. When viewed from Assembly segment wise, it is Doomdooma Assembly segment under Lakhimpur parliamentary constituency that has recorded the highest number of NOTA votes in this election. The number of NOTA votes polled in the Assembly segment is 3,140.

According to statistics made available by the (ECI) Election Commission of India, as many as 1,78,353 voters have cast NOTA votes in this Lok Sabha election against 1,47,057 in 2014 in Assam. This, when computed, comes to 0.99 per cent of the total votes polled in the State in this election.

According to ECI statistics, the constituency-wise break-up of the 1,78,353 NOTA votes polled in the State is – 8,978 in Dhubri; 21,288 in Dibrugarh; 10,466 in Gauhati; 12,569 in Jorhat; 15,913 in Kaliabor; 6,555 in Karimganj; 15,988 in Kokrajhar; 15,220 in Lakhimpur; 18,518 in Mangaldoi; 10,757 in Nowgong; 8,547 in Silchar; 15,626 in Tezpur; 8,194 in Autonomous district (Diphu) and 9,734 in Barpeta.

None of the above, or NOTA for short, also known as ‘against all’ is an EVM option designed to allow the voter to indicate disapproval of the candidates in a voting system.
