One sentenced to life

SIVASAGAR, April 5: An accused in Sivasagar was sentenced to life in prison by the special judge in Sivasagar on Thursday for raping a 5-year-old girl. According to the prosecution, the accused Ramu Tanti sexually abused the girl at a nearby tea garden  in Sori. The heinous crime was committed in the year 2016. The Special Judge of Sivasagar sentenced Ramu Tanti, under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act 2012 (Pocso), observing that such convict does not deserve sympathy and the sentence should act as a deterrent to others.

The case has been registered by Sori Police Station bearing Case No. 89/2016 and after submitting the chargesheet, the case has been prosecuted on trial before the court of the Special Judge, Sivasagar by framing charge U/s 6 of the POSCO Act 2012. After examition of 13 numbers of prosecution witnesses on Thursday, the Special Judge has convicted the accused Ramu Tanti by sentencing him to undergo rigorous imprisonment for life and also to pay a fine of Rs. 5000 in default and an imprisonment of six months for commission of the offence punishable U/s 6 of Posco Act. The Special Judge also ordered DLSA, Sivasagar for provide compensation to the victim under Assam Victim Compensation Scheme, 2012. The argument was advanced by Srimanta Gogoi.
