ONGC’s cancer awareness project completes 5 years

SIVASAGAR, May 6: ONGC Assam Asset’s CSR initiative, Project “Kiran”, a cancer awareness and treatment drive, completed five years of successful service in 2016. Iugurated on March 26, 2011, Project ‘Kiran’, a noble health care initiative to focus on patients suffering from different types of cancers, have served more than 1,000 patients from Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Guwahati, lbari, Barpeta, Dibrugarh, Jorhat, Digboi, Tinsukia etc. till date. The prime objective of this project is to provide free consultation and counseling to cancer patients of this region by the eminent cancer specialists of the country at their doorstep. Another objective of the programme is to take advantage of the visit of such eminent doctors to organize Continuing Medical Education (CME) lectures for the doctors of this region to update their knowledge about latest developments in this rapidly advancing field. This would help them in providing the currently accepted treatment protocols to their cancer patients.
Dr. Tapan Saikia, an intertiolly renowned cancer specialist and philanthropist, has been the key resource person of project “Kiran”. Apart from providing free counseling to the patients, he is also associated with awareness campaigns launched simultaneously with a view to educate people on this dreaded disease.
Like the earlier years, the two recent camps, held on 23rd January, 2016 and on 23rd April, 2016 hosted at ONGC’s Sivasagar Hospital, witnessed a huge turnout of cancer patients. A total 162 number of patients have benefited through counseling with the renowned cancer specialist Dr. Tapan Saikia. ED-Asset Mager of ONGC Assam Asset, Budhin Deuri has been actively associated with the project “Kiran” since its inception.
Deuri also spares time to meet the cancer patients and encourage them in their battle against the dreaded disease. Asset Mager profusely thanked Dr Saikia for having consented to come here all the way from Mumbai for this noble cause and added that project “Kiran” will go a long way in providing quality cancer treatment to the patients of the North Eastern region at their doorsteps.
In order to reach out to the neediest and poor, the medical team of Assam Asset has been in touch with many other renowned cancer specialists. According to Dr DS Rawat, Head - Medical Services, many doctors have shown their keen interest to be involved in this noble mission. It is worth mentioning that, a first of its kind in this far north eastern region of the country, Project “Kiran” has become a huge success with more than 1,000 beneficiaries, who received critical cancer treatment flickering a ray of hope among them and their families.
