Over 1,600 voters deprived of voting in Kokrajhar

KOKRAJHAR, April 8: At a time when the Election Commission is taking more pragmatic steps to ensure voting rights to citizens, a large number of voters in Kokrajhar district, especially under Dotma constituency of Gossaigaon subdivision of the district, were deprived of voting in the third BTC elections.

Sources in Podmabil village under Serfanguri police station in Kokrajhar district said that around 1,653 voters from 11 villages were deprived of voting on Wednesday as their mes were missing in the voters’ list. The villages are Podmabil, Belguri, Athiabari, Aojarguri, Dwimuguri, Lakhan Basti, Lopongtola,  Langatola, Guabari, Uttar Guwabari and Sapkata. All these villages fall under Dotma ST constituency.

Talking to media persons, the gaon burah of Podmabil village, Badan Hembram lamented that many people in the village could not cast their votes as their mes were missing from the voters’ list. He said that he had informed the matter to the election officer in Gossaigaon.

Voters of Podmabil and Belguri villages like Twila Mardi, Sabita Daimary and bin rzary also said that they had voters’ I-card and had been voting in every election, even in the 2014 Lok Sabha election. But this time they were surprised not to find their mes in the voters’ list.
