Overall noise pollution decreased during Diwali: Pollution Control Board of Assam (PCBA)

GUWAHATI: Though overall noise level has relatively decreased this Diwali, there has been a visible increase on air pollution in Guwahati city. As such, degradation of air quality has alarmed the city residents this year. This was revealed by the Pollution Control Board of Assam (PCBA).

Talking to The Sentinel on Thursday, an official of the PCBA said that peoples’ consciousness on noise pollution has been visibly growing. “At the same time, it must be realized that the chemicals used in the firecrackers has been trebling the air pollution which will cause health hazards.” The PCBA stressed that the chemicals used in crackers can increase health problems like mental disorder, nerve, hearth, kidney, skin and asthmatic problems and others. “Chemicals used in crackers like - barium nitrate, lithium, mercury, arsenic, Sulfur dioxide, magnesium and copper are quite harmful for human health,” the PCBA official said.

Reiterating the Supreme Court ban on the harmful chemicals, the PCBA said that from next year onwards, green crackers will be available in all the states across the country. It must be mentioned here that according to noise standard in dB(A), during day time (in between 6 Am to 10 Pm), the permissible noise standard in industrial zone should be 75 decibel, 65 decibel in commercial zone, 55 decibel in residential zone and 50 decibel in silence zone. Other hand, during night time, the permissible noise standard in industrial zone should be 70 decibel, while there should be 55 decibel in commercial zone, 45 decibel in residential zone and 40 decibel in silence zone.

Compare to the noise level recorded during last year’s Diwali at 71.3 decibel, this year, it was recorded at 69.9 decibel on November 6 and 75.4 decibel on November 7 in silence zone (Panbazar). Other hand, there were 79.8 decibel during last year’s Diwali while it was recorded at 69.3 decibel on November 6 and 76.1 decibel on November 7 at residential zone (Rehabari). Moreover, the noise level during last year’s Diwali in commercial zone (Ganeshguri) was recorded at 79.1 decibel while this year, it was recorded at 70.3 decibel on November 6 and 71.8 decibel on November 7.

The PCBA report on ambient air quality monitoring before and during this Diwali was recorded at the particular matter (PM10) at 66 on October 10, 2017 and 151 on November 1, 2018, 108 on October 19, 2017, 186 on November 11, 2018 and 299 on November 7.
