Page from Karl Marx manuscript auctioned

Beijing, May 23: A page from a manuscript belonging to Karl Marx has sold for 3.34 million yuan ($524,000) at an auction here. Provided by local businessman Feng Lun, the page was sold on Monday at a price more than 10 times higher than the starting price, official news portal China.org reported on Wednesday. The document was part of the more than 1,250 pages of notes the German thinker and philosopher wrote in London between September 1850 and August 1853 as a draft for “Capital: Critique of Political Economy”, Efe news cited the report as saying.

The page contained extracts and analyses of the book “Practical Treatise on Banking” by British banker James William Gilbart which Marx referenced while writing “Capital”. The auction came the same month during which China commemorated the 200th anniversary of Marx’s birth, an event marked by a solemn ceremony at the Great Hall of the People and a speech by Chinese President Xi Jinping who called Marx the greatest thinker of modern times.
