Panchayat documents verification for married females from today

Guwahati, April1: The crucial phase of NRC update in Assam – verification of panchayat documents of married women – will begin from April 2 as linkage proof. The phase is crucial in view of the earlier order of the Gauhati High Court that said panchayat documents would not be applicable as they were private documents, but the Supreme Court later said panchayat documents could be applicable with proper verification.

The verification of panchayat documents of 29 lakh applicants who had submitted their panchayat documents will start from April 2 through a hearing process. Notices to applicants will be given in written.

Sources said the NRC authorities will be very strict during the hearing process so that there is no fraud and no one enters the NRC illegally.

Talking to The Sentinel on Sunday, State NRC Coorditor Prateek Hajela said, “At present, verification of those with family tree mismatch is going on. From tomorrow, verification of panchayat documents of married female applicants will begin. Panchayat documents will not be applicable for males. Both the processes will be over by May 31. We are bound to come up with the fil draft of the updated NRC by June 30 as per the instruction of the Supreme Court.”

There are 48 lakh applicants with family mismatch, whose verification is underway.
