Pass percentage up in commerce, fall in science stream

SHILLONG, May 10: The Meghalaya Board of School Education (MBOSE) on Thursday declared the results of the Higher Secondary School Leaving Certificate (HSSLC) examinations 2018 (Science, Commerce & Vocational).

When compared with the results of 2017 , there is a sight change in the pass percentage in the Science stream by a fall of almost 3 percent, while the pass percentage in the Commerce stream jumped by over 8 percent as compared to 2017 results. The pass percentage in the Science stream this year stands at 74.58 percent as compared to last year’s 76.76 percent.

In the Commerce stream, the pass percentage showed a tremendous increase by nearly 8 percent as compared to last year. This year, the pass percentage stands at 79.84 percent against 71.87 percent in 2017.

Boys outshone the girls in the Science stream with Rajiv Das of St Anthony’s HS School, Shillong bagging the top position followed by 7 other male students securing a spot in the top 10 list. In the Commerce stream, girls outclassed boys with Manipuri student, Chongdeinem Guite of St Edmund’s HS School, Shillong bagging the 1st position followed by 6 other female students who managed to secure a slot in the top 10.

The district with the highest pass percentage in the Science stream is East Khasi Hills with 82.78 percent followed by West Jaintia Hills with 79.21 percent. East Jaintia Hills stands at 76.27 percent, South West Khasi Hills at 74.73 percent, West Khasi Hills at 73.64 percent, Ri Bhoi at 66.14 percent. The district with the lowest pass percentage is South Garo Hills with 16.67 percent, North Garo Hills at 36.92 percent, East Garo Hills and South West Garo Hills both stand at 53.33 percent and West Garo Hills at 53.77 percent.

Meanwhile, in the Commerce stream, the district with the highest pass percentage is East Garo Hills with 93.75 percent followed by North Garo Hills with 92.31 percent; East Khasi Hills stood at 83.50 percent, West Khasi Hills at 82.43 percent, South West Khasi Hills at 80 percent, Ri Bhoi at 76.27 percent, East Jaintia Hills at 75.93 percent, West Garo Hills at 67.19 percent, West Jaintia Hills at 61.08 percent.

In the Science stream, St Anthony’s Higher Secondary School, Shillong has done it again. As in previous years, St Anthony’s never misses a spot in the top 10 and this year too, the school managed to grab as many as 11 positions — 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 7th, 8th, 9th and 10th.

The only school which made it to the top 10 besides St Anthony’s is Don Bosco College HS Section, Turawith Nishtha Barman Hajong bagging the 6th position.

Meanwhile, the schools which secured cent percent pass percentage this year include Brookside Adventist HS School and Laban Bengalee Boys’ HS School in Shillong, Maharam Government HS School in Mawkyrwat, RK Mission HS School in Cherrapunjee and St Peter’s HS School in Pyndengrei.

In the Vocational Stream, the pass percentage stands at 83.33 percent. With only 6 students appearing in the exams from one centre - St Michael’s HS School, Umsning - the total number of students who cleared the exams is 5 with 2 in the first division and 3 second division holders.
